21st Century Policing Building Trust and Legitimacy- Training Flyer 10-14-21

Following some recent negative high profile events involving police officers from across the country, the national
conversation has turned to the concept of “public trust of police”, and topics like police legitimacy, procedural
justice, and bias free policing, de-escalation, and reform have once again come to the forefront of the discussion.
Elected officials, the media, community activists, and many every day citizens keep demanding not only that
police be held accountable for their actions, but also better training, policies, and procedures in order to rebuild
trust. Many of the proponents of the aforementioned topics also are demanding police reform and that police
agencies conform to the recommendations put forth by the Presidential Task Force on 21st Century Policing
report. This course will explore the above topics, and students will learn how they relate to the service law
enforcement agencies provide to the community. This course is designed to be a proactive tool, in order to prevent
potential situations that could create a public and community relations problem for your organization.
Course Topics:
 Familiarize students with the concepts of police legitimacy, public trust, procedural justice, bias free
policing, and de-escalation.
 Provide students with relevant, real life incidents and analyze them through the lenses of the above
concepts.
 Discuss the Presidential Task Force on 21st Century Policing report and its impact in modern day
policing.
 Understand the importance of legitimacy, and how it helps in building trust with the communities
served.
 Discuss procedural justice, its 4 pillars, and how to adopt this mentality in every day operations and
interactions both internally and externally.
 Plus much more!
