NAFTO: Managing the FTO Unit

This course is designed to assist agencies in developing and managing a successful FTO program. The class is not model specific and can be utilized at agencies using the San Jose, Reno, PTO, or any other model of Field Training. We will discuss program structure, duties of a field training manager, dealing with performance issues related to FTO’s, legal issues and evaluating written observation reports. We will also look into the future of field training with a discussion about the recommendations made by the Task Force for 21st Century Policing.
The course will also cover such: Generational Leadership, Standardized Evaluations Guidelines, Ethics, Civil Liability, and field training models. Each block of study is directed at the Field Training Supervisor, and ways to improve teaching, work product, and approach to today’s Officer in Training. Information includes motivating different generations of trainees, career survival for the FTO, and liability pertaining to evaluations.
